LAS VEGAS — As reported by The Daily Beast’s Tim Mak, “Nevada Democrats Screw Military Voters,” American service men and women deployed overseas must pay their own way and hurry up and wait if they want to caucus for Democrats on Saturday.
Brian Baluta, spokesman for Dr. Joe Heck, the Republican candidate for Reid’s open U.S. Senate seat, released the following statement:
“Why are Democrat boss Harry Reid and his hand-picked successor Catherine Cortez Masto content with this arrangement that treats our active duty military like second-class citizens?
“Years ago, Republicans adopted a national rule to make it easier to caucus for those deployed abroad or disabled veterans who are physically unable attend. In Nevada, they can request an absentee ballot online and submit it by the night before the GOP caucus on Tuesday, February 23.
“Nevada Democrats Harry Reid and Catherine Cortez Masto had the opportunity push a similar rule for their party, but they chose to do nothing and stay with a system that disenfranchises military voters.”
According to Mak:
In order to vote in the Democratic caucus in Nevada, military service members stationed abroad and their families must pre-register online a week before the event. After registering, they will receive a phone number. Then, on their own dime, they must call the number at noon on Saturday.
“International calling rates and fees may apply,” the state Democratic website warns, with an asterisk.
The Americans stationed abroad would then need to loiter on the call for as long as the caucus takes—potentially hours—until the caucus had completed, regardless of their military duties or schedules.
