“On the 15th anniversary of September 11, I can remember like it was yesterday. I was working for the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. where I was an advisor on medical programs for federal law enforcement agencies. When the news about the Twin Towers broke, I dispatched our teams to New York City and then to the Pentagon. As my partner and I drove from Washington to New York City, we passed Liberty State Park in New Jersey and could see across the Hudson River to the gaping hole in the Manhattan skyline where the World Trade Center once stood.”
“I worked the rubble pile at Ground Zero and supported the federal law enforcement teams investigating the attack. I will never forget the sights, smells, and sounds. I will also never forget the outpouring of support from people across the country who came in solidarity, lining the West Side Highway to cheer on the rescue workers as they traveled to and from the site. Or the restaurant owners who were closed down for business, but opened to feed the responders. It was one of our nation’s darkest days, but the response represented the best of America.”
